Zambia is a country with a population of more than 16.5 million. In 2015, more than half of Zambians earn less than the international poverty line and only 26% of the population has access to safely managed sanitation services. Here are 10 facts about sanitation in Zambia. In 2015, 61% of the total population had access to an "at least basic water service", or 86% of the urban population and 44% of the rural population. However, around 6 million people in Zambia still lack access to "at least basic water".

Zambia is rich in rivers, such as the transboundary Zambezi and lakes Tanganyika, Mweru and Kariba. It is estimated that only 1.5% of the annual renewable water resources are being used at present. There are significant regional differences across the country with regard to place and time when water is available. Lakes Bangweulu, Mweru, and Tanganyika all are located in the northern reaches of the country, near its borders with Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lake Tanganyika is the largest of these three, but only its southern end is situated within Zambia.

Access to clean water is unequal. In Zambia, 90 per cent of households in urban areas have access to safe water compared to only 53 per cent of households in rural areas. Urban areas also have higher access to sanitation at 70 per cent, compared to rural populations, whose access is only at 25 per cent.

33 per cent of the population use a basic sanitation service (41 per cent in urban areas, 28 per cent in rural areas)
10 per cent of the population practices open defecation (1 per cent in urban areas, 16 per cent in rural areas)
24 per cent of the population has access to basic hygiene services, ie a handwashing facility with soap and water (36 per cent urban, 15 per cent rural)

Tap water in the major towns is purified and perfectly safe to drink. In the more remote areas always boil it first, except if you're staying at a lodge or hotel where drinking water is boiled already. Bottled water is readily available in the bigger towns.

Poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) are the main causes of infections like cholera and diarrhoea, and inadequate WASH continues to be the leading cause of death of children under the age of five in sub-Saharan Africa. Girls and women are particularly affected by poor WASH conditions.
